Sacred Stories & Mythology
The Legend of Pampa-kshetra
Parvati's Penance on Hemakuta Hill
According to the Sthala Purana, Goddess Parvati, known locally as Pampa, desired to marry the ascetic Lord Shiva. She undertook intense penance (tapasya) on Hemakuta Hill, performing severe austerities to win his affection. Shiva, initially indifferent, eventually tested her unwavering resolve and, pleased by her devotion, accepted her as his consort. This divine union transformed the site into Pampa-kshetra, the sacred abode of Pampa, and the river flowing through it became the Pampa (modern Tungabhadra). Shiva is thus worshipped here as Pampapati, the 'husband of Pampa', symbolizing eternal love and spiritual commitment.
