Sacred Stories & Mythology
The Bhrigu Curse & Vishnu's Quest
Sage Bhrigu's Test and Lakshmi's Departure
One of the most pivotal legends revolves around Sage Bhrigu, who undertook the task of identifying the greatest among the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva). After testing Brahma and Shiva, he approached Vishnu, who was reclining in his cosmic sleep. In an act of audacious defiance, Bhrigu kicked Vishnu's chest. Instead of anger, Vishnu calmly massaged Bhrigu's foot, inquiring if he was hurt. However, the goddess Lakshmi, who resides in Vishnu's chest, was deeply offended by Bhrigu's insult and Vishnu's apparent lack of reaction. Feeling disrespected and hurt, Lakshmi departed Vaikuntha, Vishnu's abode, and descended to Earth, seeking solace in Kolhapur.
Overwhelmed with sorrow and longing for Lakshmi, Vishnu himself descended to Earth in search of her, taking the form of Srinivasa. He embarked on a period of intense penance and meditation on the sacred Venkatadri (Tirumala), enduring hardships as he waited for his beloved consort. This period of separation and search forms the basis of Srinivasa's manifestation on the hills.
Srinivasa's Penance & Divine Union
The Marriage of Srinivasa and Padmavati
As per the Sthala Purana, Srinivasa, in his search for Lakshmi, found her reborn as Princess Padmavati, the daughter of Akasa Raja. After overcoming various trials and divine interventions, including a charming narrative involving a fortune-teller and divine approval, Srinivasa and Padmavati were united in marriage at Narayanavanam. This divine union was celebrated with great pomp and celestial participation. Following their marriage, both deities chose to remain eternally as stone icons on the seven hills, intending to bless and liberate devotees from the trials and tribulations of the Kali Yuga. This act cemented Venkateswara's presence as the Kaliyuga Prathyaksha Daivam on Tirumala.
